I can’t remember when there was a temporary tax. Once a tax is implemented, seems like our legislature forgets how to eliminate it. At this time, we do not need any new taxes!!! We need CUTS. There are plenty of places where money can be cut out. Stop funding anything that isn’t provided for in our state constitution….. I am quite sure we could balance our budget and keep it balanced and have nmoney left over in case of emergencies, and lower taxes across the board, if we would do that.

Unfortunately there is not a tax a democrat doesn’t love. There are no such thing as tempory tax with a democrat. Who do they think they are kidding?
We, the people, are more than a little fed up with our so called representatives stealing our money. I think it is time for a real tax revolt. Not only that, I think it is past time to cut the salaries and benefits of our legislators to reflect those of the private employed in this state. Since when are they more special than those that pay their wages? when we put a stop to the high wages and benefits they will not be so eager to make the so called serving of the people a career. It is time we the people start getting a handle on those that think they are smarter and deserve more than their electorate. Lets start letting them know we have already been taxed to the max, and that their incessant taxation frame of mind “IS” going to change to reflect the feelings of those that have to pay those taxes. I have seen nothing in our constitution that says the state is to tax people to pay other peoples insurance costs, provide transportation, or provide education for illegals. Lets start cutting here, and I think we will find we don’t need to raise taxes, or add new ones.

What the heck, a temporary tax increase on top of Obama care? Can you say, “Depression”? Big and Medium size companies are already farming out work oversees and laying people off. Small companies will close and people will quit spending money because they are broke or are scared that their job maybe next.
The Legislators need to write a bill to create and put a progressive tax on doctors, hospitals, medical equipment manufactures, pharmaceutical and insurance companies. These companies and individuals are the cause of the poor not having health care because of what they charge in the first place. I say that if doctors, hospitals, medical equipment manufactures, pharmaceutical and insurance companies don’t step up to the plate to help the uninsured and underinsured, then they should end up paying huge windfall taxes on the incomes and profits. The progressive tax should be based on their incomes and profits, the more you make the more the government will take.
I am University educated and I do not make $80 to $220 for a five minute office visit with my customers. Doctors and Hospital should not either. Insurance companies should not make huge profits or salaries either. This is what is causing inflation in the first place. These culprits as well as our legislators need to live within there means, just like we do. Could you imagine someone that works at McDonald charging $20.00 to $40.00 for a hamburger, so he or she could make an income of $1,000,000 per year? As these greedy people raise there cost of doing business, so does everyone else. The pay raise you get is eaten up. The only people that get rich are the elitist. There need to be some checks and balances established for types of jobs with limited competition.

It’s encouraging to see the grassroots reaction to runaway taxation! It’s also encouraging to hear Genine Garofalo and others freaking out over the tea parties. Be afraid, the people aren’t as stupid as you think… and they’re waking up to what you are doing!

I agree Norm! I attended all three tea parties in downtown Seattle and it was so great to meet so many people who get it. We have had enough of our hard earned money wasted on pet projects and big government. It is time for change right here in Washington State. I heard today that our phone calls might have made a difference because the vote was close. I guess it still passed the house and we will have to call when it comes before the senate. As soon as I find out who voted yes on this bill I will be calling the reps. to remind them we do not want anymore taxes PERIOD! I will also call the reps. that voted NO and thank them because they are listening to the people. We just have to keep calling and letting them know we are over taxed and tired of the nonsense!

Now is NOT the time to be considering taxes – “temporary” or otherwise. I fully agree with the previous comments.

This appears to be a typical legislative blackmail setup: underfund what’s important to the voters, then ask them to ‘temporarily’ raise their taxes. Temporary taxes are rare beasts, like the federal income tax – just for the Great War, you know.
Instead, they should adequately fund what’s important, and underfund what’s not. Schools, public safety, and public health should be fully funded; almost everything else should exist on leftovers. We could put up with potholes to keep people alive; but ask us to raise our taxes (again) for road maintenance and public transportation, if you dare.
And next time things are going great, put a bunch of money aside for the inevitable bad times to follow. Something like 20% of the biennial budget should be reasonable.

I have never known of a temporary tax increase that did not become a permanent tax increase.
